How to build business credit fast: the 90-day plan

The compressed sequence: EIN + DUNS + bank + 3 Net-30 vendors + early payment = published Paydex 78-82 in 90 days. Day-by-day checklist included.

Building business credit doesn't require a $2,000 "credit-building program" or a specialist. The mechanics are simple, publicly documented, and executable in 90 days if you sequence the steps correctly.

This guide is the compressed version of what would otherwise be six months of trial and error. Follow it top-to-bottom and you'll finish with 3+ D&B trade lines, a published Paydex score, and eligibility for tier-3 business credit cards.

3-5 D&B trade lines

Week 1: Foundation

Nothing else works if these three things aren't in place. Do them in parallel:

  1. 1Get an EIN (10 minutes, free). The IRS EIN Assistant is open Mon-Fri 7am-10pm ET. Instant issuance at the end. See How to get an EIN for the walkthrough of every question on Form SS-4.
  2. 2Request a DUNS number (free, ~30 days). D&B verifies via a phone call within 5-15 days. Free path is fine — the paid rush costs $200 and rarely justifies itself. See How to get a DUNS number.
  3. 3Open a business bank account.Every day you transact through a personal account is a day you're building a "shell business" flag with the bureaus. Mercury and Bluevine are $0/month fintechs; Chase Business Complete costs $15 but unlocks Chase Ink card eligibility.

Don't skip the bank account

Every business credit bureau flags a business as a shell operation if the business bank account is missing. This flag lasts years and blocks most tier-3 credit products even after your Paydex hits 80. Open the bank account before applying for any Net-30 vendor.

Weeks 2-4: First trade lines

The moment your DUNS is issued, apply to Uline, Quill, and Grainger simultaneously. All three are starter-friendly (~90% approval with a clean file), require no personal guarantee, and report to D&B within 30-60 days of your first paid invoice.

VendorApproval timeFirst-order minReports to
Uline1-3 days$50D&B
Quill1-5 days$50D&B, Experian, Equifax
Grainger1-3 daysNoneD&B

Place a small first order at each vendor immediately after approval — this activates the Net-30 line. Order things you'll actually use (shipping supplies at Uline, paper at Quill, hardware at Grainger).

Weeks 5-8: Pay early, not on time

When your first Net-30 invoices arrive, pay them 10-15 days before the due date. This single behavior is what separates Paydex 80 from Paydex 90.

The math: Paydex 80 = paying on due date. Paydex 90 = paying 20 days early. Paydex 100 = paying 30+ days early (rarely worth pursuing — 90 is the practical ceiling for most SMBs).

Set up ACH auto-pay from your business bank so early payment is automatic. Missing a single invoice by 5 days drops Paydex ~15 points and takes 6-12 months of clean history to recover.

Days 60-90: First Paydex score

D&B needs 3+ reporting trade lines before publishing a Paydex score. If you applied to Uline/Quill/Grainger in parallel and paid all three invoices on time, your first Paydex should publish around day 60-90.

Verify reporting proactively

Log into your D&B iUpdate profile at day 45 and confirm all three vendors show as trade lines. If any are missing after 60 days, call the vendor's AP department directly — sometimes they forget to report the first invoice. This one phone call can save weeks.

Days 90+: Add depth

Once you have 3 trade lines and a published Paydex, the return on adding more starter vendors starts diminishing. Shift to:

Second-tier vendors (larger trade lines)

  • Ferguson Enterprises (plumbing/HVAC) or Sherwin-Williams (paint) — trades-focused, bigger dollar amounts, dual-bureau reporting.
  • Staples Business Advantage — Quill's sister, B2B pricing, more depth.

SBFE coverage

Home Depot Commercial Account reports to Experian Business AND the Small Business Financial Exchange (SBFE) — the data source Chase, Amex, and Capital One pull when underwriting business credit cards. Without SBFE coverage, tier-3 business cards are harder to get regardless of Paydex.

Business credit cards

Once Paydex is 70+ and you have SBFE coverage, you're a candidate for real business credit cards. Amex Blue Business Cash (2% back, no annual fee) and Chase Ink Business Cash (5% on office supplies) are the two most likely to approve at this stage.

What NOT to do

  • Don't pay for "credit-building services" that charge $500-2000.Every service they offer is either free (EIN, DUNS) or has a $49/mo alternative (Nav Prime).
  • Don't apply for a business credit card in month 1.With no D&B file and no history, you'll get denied — and that inquiry stays on your file for 12 months, hurting future applications.
  • Don't use your personal credit card for "business expenses" hoping it counts.Personal card usage never touches business credit files. You're missing the trade line entirely.
  • Don't assume Amazon and Home Depot count for Paydex. Amazon reports slowly and inconsistently; Home Depot Commercial Account reports to Experian Business, not D&B. Focus on Uline / Quill / Grainger for Paydex specifically.
